MIDWIFERY X FASHION

RE-ITERATE!

AT MOURNING WAKE

Upon visiting Tate Britain, I chose this painting as my source of inspiration. Initially, the pattern of the craquelure on the painting was a point of interest. Turner's depiction of death itself, as an alleged response to the Peterloo Massacre was also a point of interest.

An exploration of ideas.

Straying from the morbid interpretation, I wanted to create a modern parallel to this painting. Uncertain of what to make of this, I fell into a slump. And it hit me.

MOTIVATION TO DO MIDWIFERY: TO EMPOWER WOMEN THROUGH THE INTENSE JOURNEY OF CHILDBIRTH.

Getting to know our midwife, and setting up a clear visual of her lively interests and strong personality.

Circling around the idea of a fun cocoon coat or wrap style outer layer, to represent her boisterous nature - customised with flapper pocket tassels to reflect her disdain for the almost impractical pockets on her midwife uniform.

Recontructing existing patterns to create and draft our own patterns.

Based on the fundamental shapes of the patterns themselves, I experimented.
